چکیده
The paper examines tax progressivity and income inequality using Census Bureau Current Population Survey (CPS) personal data. Kakwani index is used to derive for All, Male, Female, White African American wage of CPS respondents, respectively. results show a system that partly progressive mostly regressive. Due its regressive nature, the did not display entire period under analysis respondents as well when broken-down by race gender in United States years 1996 2011.

The Determinants of Personal Income Tax Progressivity Around the Globe
This paper utilizes a novel database collected by the authors to document features of the progressivity of personal income tax systems across 209 countries for the years 1980-2009. We measure progressivity in several ways. First, we associate it with the increase in effective average (marginal) tax rates between a wage of zero and ten times the average wage in a country. Second, we consider the...
متن کاملProgressivity of Personal Income Tax in Croatia: Decomposition of Tax Base and Rate Effects
This paper presents progressivity breakdowns for Croatian personal income tax (henceforth PIT) in 1997 and 2004. The decompositions reveal how the elements of the system – tax schedule, allowances, deductions and credits – contribute to the achievement of progressivity, over the quantiles of pre-tax income distribution. Through the use of ‘single parameter’ Gini indices, the social decision mak...
متن کاملInference Methods on Income Inequality and Tax Progressivity Indices: An empirical application to Spanish data
This paper applies asymptotic and bootstrap inference methods for a set of non-linear inequality and progressivity indices. The non-degenerate U-statistic theory is applied to indices which are functions of several U-statistics. Generally, U-statistic variance estimators are difficult to compute. Formulae for a straightforward plug-in estimator of index variances have been derived. This is espe...
متن کاملBeyond the Labour Income Tax Wedge: The Unemployment-Reducing Effect of Tax Progressivity
Beyond the Labour Income Tax Wedge: The Unemployment-Reducing Effect of Tax Progressivity In this paper we argue that, for a given overall level of labour income taxation, a more progressive tax schedule increases employment. From a theoretical point of view, higher progressivity increases overall employment through a wage moderating effect and also because employment of low-paid workers is mor...
متن کاملThe Incidence of Income Tax on Wages and Labour Supply*
In the simple framework of a static model for equilibrium wages and labour supplies, we show that the incidence of income tax on equilibrium wages can be measured independently from the individual labour supply elasticity. This extends recent work by Blundell, Duncan and Meghir (1998) and Eissa and Liebman (1996), who estimate labour supply elasticities, and Gruber (1997), who estimates tax inc...
